Product Description - Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), sometimes called "the scent of the sixties", has a soft, earthy, exotic aroma. In Eastern cultures, it is often used around the house to provide general health support and to get rid of negative emotions. It is very beneficial for the skin, helping to reduce a wrinkled or cracked appearance. Patchouli is a general tonic that soothes occasional nausea.
Harvesting / Extraction Information: Extraction of patchouli essential oil occurs by steam distillation of the dried leaves, and requires breaking the cell walls by steam scalding, slight fermentation, or drying. The main chemical component of patchouli oil is patchoulol, a sesquiterpene alcohol. Leaves can be harvested several times a year, and when dried, they can be exported for distillation. Some sources claim that the highest quality oil is usually produced from fresh leaves distilled near where they are harvested; others believe it is best to boil the dried leaves and ferment them for a period.
